Build overview

Necromancy is your primary offense. Raise the strongest available corpse, send it into danger first, and replace it whenever a more useful servant falls.

Begin in necromancer's robes reinforced by heavy boots and gauntlets. Upgrade those armored pieces over time, with fully enchanted Falmer or Daedric armor available as an end-game war form.

Carry an enchanted one-handed mace for the work your servants cannot finish. Use it to deliver poison, damage isolated survivors, capture souls, and perform deliberate ritual executions.

“Death is not a boundary. It is an instruction written in a language lesser minds refuse to learn.”

I

Exile beneath a golden name

Backstory

You were born into a minor scholarly family in Alinor, where magical talent was expected and magical embarrassment was unforgivable. You excelled in the approved disciplines but found their division absurd. Conjuration claimed authority over spirits, Enchanting over souls, and the priesthood over death, yet each recoiled from the moment those subjects became one problem.

Your first experiments were presented as preservation. A dead songbird moved for three breaths; an embalmed hand retained the memory of a spell; a dying tutor answered one final question after his heart stopped. The results were undeniable, which made the scandal worse. Your records were seized, your patrons withdrew their names, and exile was arranged with the quiet efficiency reserved for a disgrace that must never become public history.

Skyrim promised what Summerset would not: barrows without end, battlefields that replenished themselves, isolated mages willing to sell dangerous books, and laws too fragmented to police every cave. You travelled north beneath the manner of a merely arrogant Altmer scholar, carrying a few hidden notes and the conviction that death was a system waiting to be mastered. You did not seek companionship. You sought material.

The border crossing was supposed to be the final anonymous step into a province where nobody knew your disgrace. Instead, an Imperial patrol found you moving through the mountain passes at the same moment it closed its net around a band of Stormcloak rebels. Your protests, papers, and carefully chosen explanation meant nothing to soldiers expecting an ambush.

They confiscated your satchel, bound your hands, and placed you among the prisoners. By dawn, you are riding in a cart toward Helgen, listening to the condemned speak of gods, kings, and civil war while you quietly study which of them might soon leave behind a useful corpse.

Drag the level marker to follow this build's attribute plan.

Level 100
1 100
Health

Raise Health enough to survive Master-difficulty arrows, dragon breath, and the dangerous moment before your servants establish control. Heavy boots, gauntlets, and eventual full armor do not replace a reliable reserve.

Magicka

The dominant investment. Large reserves let you raise stronger corpses, summon replacements, sustain frost pressure, and recast necromancy when a servant falls or a ritual collapses.

Stamina

Leave Stamina close to its starting value. The mace is an execution tool rather than a duelling weapon, and vegetable soup or enchantments can support the occasional power attack.

Skills & disciplines

Secondary Supporting skills that round out the expedition.

The Conjuration skill constellation symbol 01
Primary discipline

Conjuration

The defining discipline. Progress from temporary raised corpses to Dread Zombie, Dead Thrall, and the Necromantic Grimoire summons. Prioritize the necromancy branch, Twin Souls, and enough cost reduction to replace servants during a long fight.

The Enchanting skill constellation symbol 02
Primary discipline

Enchanting

Every captured soul becomes research capital. Put Soul Trap or another malevolent effect on the early mace, reduce Conjuration costs on robes, and fortify the heavy boots and gauntlets that gradually harden the build into its end-game war form.

The One-Handed skill constellation symbol 03
Primary discipline

One-Handed

The mace is the build's personal instrument. Let servants create the opening, strike isolated or staggered survivors, apply poison when the victim still breathes, then claim the finishing blow and soul as a ritual execution.

The Heavy Armor skill constellation symbol 04
Primary discipline

Heavy Armor

Begin with heavy iron boots and gauntlets beneath the robes, then upgrade those slots through stronger materials as loot and skill allow. Once Heavy Armor is established, a fully enchanted Falmer or Daedric set becomes the master necromancer's evil-looking war harness.

The Alchemy skill constellation symbol 05
Secondary discipline

Alchemy

Brew paralysis, lingering damage, weakness to poison, frost support, and emergency recovery mixtures. Poison is not a substitute for the undead army; it is the final controlled variable applied before a mace execution.

The Destruction skill constellation symbol 06
Secondary discipline

Destruction

Use frost as battlefield control rather than as the main source of damage. Slow living enemies, drain the Stamina of warriors, and avoid indiscriminate fire that destroys corpses you intend to raise.

Laws of the black art

Role play

Play the Necromancer as a patient scholar whose cruelty is methodical rather than chaotic. These rules make corpses, soul gems, poisons, ruins, and social isolation part of the character's daily discipline.

  1. 01

The corpse is the first resource

Before looting a defeated group, inspect every body for level, equipment, and usefulness. Raise the strongest available subject, strip only what the next ritual does not need, and abandon a servant only when a superior specimen is found.

  2. 02

    Servants enter first

Never begin a fair fight. Send a summon or undead follower through the doorway, establish distance, apply frost or poison from safety, and close with the mace only after the enemy's attention and stamina are exhausted.

  3. 03

    Preserve what can still serve

Avoid fire, disintegration, and careless area damage when a valuable corpse is present. Store permanent-thrall candidates in a controlled location and regard named bodies as rare components rather than disposable clutter.

  4. 04

    Knowledge outranks allegiance

Join institutions for their libraries, trainers, relics, and access. Complete favors when they advance the work, but refuse sentimental loyalty and make choices according to the value of the knowledge recovered.

  5. 05

    The mace completes the rite

Do not trade blows like a common warrior. Wait until the undead have pinned or weakened a chosen victim, then step forward with an enchanted and poisoned mace to inflict the final wound, capture the soul, and formally end the encounter.

  6. 06

    Death must pay twice

Fill soul gems whenever practical, enchant recovered equipment, and sell the results to finance spell tomes and ingredients. Every enemy should contribute first as a servant and then as stored power or research income.

  7. 07

    Wear the correct skin

Keep robes and the masked hood as the character's ritual identity, reinforced by progressively stronger heavy boots and gauntlets. Don a complete enchanted Daedric or Falmer set only for late-game sieges, deep ruins, and open conflict where secrecy has already failed.

  8. 08

    Heroism requires a specimen

Accept a seemingly noble quest only when it leads to a tomb, cursed artifact, supernatural enemy, or inaccessible archive. Save lives incidentally if necessary, but never pretend altruism was the reason for going.

Survey no. 01

Survey 01

Labyrinthian offers the perfect private theatre for forbidden study—ancient, cold, and already arranged around the dead.

Survey 02

Vestments of the grave

Equipment

Begin in necromancer's robes with simple iron boots and gauntlets. Upgrade those two heavy pieces through stronger materials as the build grows, preserving the ritual silhouette while gaining protection and Heavy Armor experience. In the end game, enchanted Falmer or Daedric armor can replace the robes entirely for open war.

Unique artifact — only one can be recovered in a playthrough.

Three forms of the black art

Apprentice, ascendant, war form

Compare the build's three complete silhouettes—humble necromancer's robes, enchanted ascendant vestments, and the fully armored late-game alternative.

The grave apprentice

Begin in scavenged necromancer's robes with practical heavy boots and gauntlets hidden beneath the cloth, relying on the raised dead for protection.

The ascendant ritualist

Enchanted runic robes, a skeletal mask, and upgraded heavy extremities preserve the ritualist identity while displaying complete mastery of Conjuration and souls.

The armored horror

For the alternative war form, replace the robe with a fully enchanted Falmer or Daedric set and become the armored shape that follows behind the undead army.

Institutions to be hollowed out

Factions

The College provides the masters, books, and ritual facilities required to perfect the black art. The Dark Brotherhood turns death into a profession and supplies discreet access to bodies, poisons, and forbidden places. Those two allegiances are enough.

VII

The descent into mastery

Quest route

Follow these six chapters as a deliberate corruption arc, beginning with your first uncontrolled zombies and ending with death transformed into ritual, research, and profession.

  1. 1
The journey begins The Rising Dead

Make the Plague of the Dead ritual site your first destination once the anonymous letter arrives at level 5. Destroy the escaped zombies north of Southfringe Sanctum and recover Conjure Zombie—or Conjure Foul Zombie at level 11 or above—to establish the build's signature summon immediately.

  2. 2
Next waypoint Blood on the Ice

Investigate Windhelm's ritual murders as a rival practitioner studying another necromancer's errors. Recover the Necromancer Amulet, keep Wuunferth available as a trainer, and let the case establish your fascination with carefully prepared bodies.

  3. 3
    Next waypoint The Black Star

Carry Azura's Star to Nelacar and corrupt it into the Black Star. The choice severs another tie to orthodox Altmer piety and creates the ideal reusable vessel for the human souls harvested by the Mace of Molag Bal.

  4. 4
    Next waypoint Conjuration Ritual Spell

Reach mastery under Phinis Gestor, bind an Unbound Dremora, and claim the Sigil Stone. Use it in the Midden's Atronach Forge to create Daedric equipment, proving that you can compel Oblivion to supply both soldiers and armor.

  5. 5
Next waypoint Dreams of the Dead

Enter Gallows Hall, solve the dead master's ritual, and inherit the Staff of Worms, Bloodworm Helm, Bone Forge, and a permanent necromantic laboratory. This is the point where secret study becomes a complete way of life.

  6. 6
    Final destination Hail Sithis!

Enter the Dark Brotherhood through Innocence Lost and carry its contracts to their conclusion. The questline turns poisoned mace work, corpse selection, and ritual killing into a profession, while its final reward finances the enchanted heavy armor and master spell tomes of the end game.
